UD dance class changes lives for people who are wheelchair bound
New Castle, Del. - For the moments she spends on the dance floor, 28 year-old Lindsay is in her own world and forgets that she lives with Cerebral Palsy and uses a wheelchair.
“When I am on the dance floor I feel like I am a princess with my prince,” Lindsay, of Bear, said. “It makes me feel like I don’t have a disability. I feel like I am using my legs and I am no longer in my wheelchair.”
Lindsay has been taking ballroom dance lessons at the University of Delaware for the last two years . . . More Article

Wheelchair rugby puts athletes back on the team
Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) -- Talbot Kennedy became a quadriplegic on the last day of high school. He's still an athlete. Playing rugby has helped Kennedy come to terms with his injury and his new life using a wheelchair.
"I've always been active in sports, and being on a sports team, it's almost like you're part of a family," he says. "It's your second family." . . . More Article

Disabled mom fighting to keep her son
Can a quadriplegic woman be a good parent? Her ex-boyfriend filed a custody suit that says no
Kaney O'Neill knows she has limits as a mother.
The 31-year-old Des Plaines woman cannot walk, move her fingers independently or feel anything from the chest down. A decade ago, O'Neill was a Navy airman apprentice when she was knocked from a balcony during Hurricane Floyd, leaving her a quadriplegic.
When she discovered she was pregnant last December, she felt fear and joy, a journey the Tribune chronicled in August. She quickly embraced the opportunity to raise a child, feeling she had the money and family support to make up for her paralysis.
David Trais, her ex-boyfriend and the 49-year-old father of their now 5-month-old son, disagreed that she was up to the challenge. . . . More Article

Soccer gives wheelchair users a powerful boost
Athletes triumph in club's first season
Timothy Donovan cried out with glee as he pushed the oversize soccer ball into the goal with his wheelchair. He then raced to tell his father about his feat.
"I like making goals," said Timothy, a student at Russell Elementary School in Quantico.
Observing similar moments of triumph led Debbie Locastro to volunteer to help get Fairfax County's first power soccer league off the ground.
It is the first competitive team sport designed for power wheelchair users, according to the U.S. Power Soccer Association . . . More Article

One wheelchair -- one lesson of problems in health care reform
By Drew Griffin and Kathleen Johnston- July, 20 2009
SACRAMENTO, California (CNN) -- Debbie Brown used to process medical and dental forms for a living before a debilitating illness forced her into early disability retirement and left her in a simple, no-frills wheelchair -- a rented wheelchair that has cost taxpayers about $1,200.
Brown says the public should be outraged about her wheelchair.
Why? She says she could buy a comparable wheelchair on the Internet for $440 if she had the money. It sounded hard to believe that her rented, $1,200 taxpayer-funded wheelchair could be bought for $440, so CNN decided to check -- and instead found an even better deal.
CNN went to the same company that charges Medicare for Brown's chair, Apria Healthcare, and bought it for $349 . . .More Article

Don't neglect your fellow human being;
many isolated through circumstance
Humboldt Beacon-- 04/01/2009
We all know that life is pretty tough out there. People who have held the same job for years are getting laid off, retirement funds are being desecrated, stocks are volatile, and houses impossible to sell or buy. As bad as it is, there is something people all around us are experiencing that is much worse. I'm talking about the people who are “social isolates” who are experiencing . . .More Article

Rosalie and me: two in a wheelchair
The first of a new weekly series on the realities of life as a disabled father
One of the effects of Rosalie growing up and becoming more mobile is that I have lost my justification for using the car on short journeys. My rationale used to go something like this: she can't walk far, and she could run out into the road. Because of this, when we are out she needs to sit on my lap, which makes pushing my wheelchair very hard work and restricts how far we can go “on foot”. But now she is a little girl (NO, Dad. I'm a big girl) and can walk on her own, as well as . . .More Article

Disabled man's crusade a bane to business owners
By Carol J. Williams - Los Angeles Times
January 5, 2009
Lingering fog shrouds the Venice boardwalk midday as Thomas Mundy rolls past ice cream vendors, T-shirt shacks and falafel stands, a discerning eye trained on the warrens of beach-themed kitsch and quick nibbles. He's not looking for leather thong pendants or Jamaican trinkets in memory of Bob Marley, or to commune with the manic crowd of in-line skaters and street artists. Mundy is trolling for barriers to his patronage -- a threshold too high for his wheelchair, a parking lot with blue-striped access lanes narrower than eight feet, a public restroom where the coat hook on the back of the door, if there is one, is above his reach. One fighter in a burgeoning army of crusaders for disabled access, Mundy says he has filed more than 150 lawsuits in 18 months demanding....More Article

ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT IN A SUBURB of Albany , a group of children dressed as vampires and witches ran past a middle-aged woman in plain clothes. She gripped a leather harness — like the kind used for Seeing Eye dogs — which was attached to a small, fuzzy black-and-white horse barely tall enough to reach the woman’s hip.
“Cool costume,” one of the kids said, nodding toward her. But she wasn’t dressed up. The woman, Ann Edie, was fueling order that simply blind and out for an evening walk with Panda, her guide miniature horse. ....More Article
