DisabilityVoice Newsletter #13-- 01/06/2010
This is Timothy A Carey. I am the creator, developer, and owner of DisabilityVoice.
This is the 1st newsletter of 2010(#13).
This is the time of year many people make New Year's Resolutions. Some people make resolutions to stop smoking, eat healthier, or exercise more. It is not often we hear about the New Year's Resolutions people with disabilities make. This newsletter edition has a New Year's Resolution theme as it relates to people with disabilities.
Articles and Resources I Think Are Important:
Universal Wellness Project of Wisconsin Fox Cities
Rarely if ever do we hear about people with disabilities making a New Year's Resolution to be more physically fit and healthy. The Universal Wellness Project of the Wisconsin Fox Cities is making such resolutions possible to many people with disabilities. By working with local YMCA and other businesses this project is working to make exercise equipment and exercise facilities along with trained professionals more accessible to people with disabilities. People with disabilities having more access to fitness have many benefits. This includes emotional well being, confidence, and possibly more independence. This also includes less secondary conditions, for instance, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Matt Eddy Going for a World Record in Wheelchair Travel
In June of 2010 Matt Eddy will drive his power wheelchair from his home in Massachusetts to California. Is that an amazing New Year's Resolution or what! I encourage my friends, family, and colleagues to donate to this cause. DisabilityVoice and The Traveling Wheelchair website are among the first to start publicizing this amazing adventure. The Traveling Wheelchair website is run out of Massachusetts. Our 2 groups will be working to encourage other groups to help and also encourage individuals to donate.
Please donate to this great cause or possibly help promote his trip. Make helping people part of your New Year's Resolution. Those who donate please e-mail me at tcarey@DisabilityVoice.us , so I know how things are going for raising money. Use the following link to go to The Traveling Wheelchair website. There you can see a more detailed description, information on how to donate, and a comments section on this goal.

Hollister Accessibility Resolution
Wouldn't it be nice if all stores would make a New Year's Resolution to be accessible to everyone. I have actually had problems at the Hollister in the Fox River Mall Appleton Wisconsin. The aisles were definitely not to the Americans with Disabilities Act standards. I could basically only access about half of the store and I had to move a piece of furniture to even get into the store. I won't be shopping at any Hollister or affiliated store until they get their act together. Check out this article about Hollister being sued for accessibility.
